As you can see, the first thing that Jesus recognized was the men's faith. Without Faith you can do nothing and it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6). I believe it is very important for us to understand what Jesus did thereafter.
He addressed sin, when we have sins, we block God's power to flow through us. Jesus saw that the men's biggest problem was sin. Before we can be healed we must deal with sin in our lives and Jesus is the door to our healing.
Once that is dealt with, Healing can then come. Spiritual issues must be attended to first before physical ones are. If not it is like applying a bandage on a thorn without removing it first. They thought Jesus was blaspheming by forgiving sin. Jesus is God (John 10:30) He has the same authority and power God has.
Whatever good we do, there will always be those who question and oppose God's work. But Jesus knew their thoughts. Jesus is omniscient. He knows us better than we know ourselves because he created us (John 1:3).
Anyone can say "Your sins are forgiven" but can anyone heal? That is what Jesus was asking the scribes and Pharisees to prove that Jesus was indeed God and that His words weren't empty; he healed the man by his words. People were amazed at what happened and they glorified God.
So we must always deal with sins and shortcomings first in our lives and then Gods power can flow through us.
Bible Reference: - Matthew 9:1-8 1Jesus stepped into a boat crossed over and came to his own town. 2Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
3At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!" 4Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." 7And the man got up and went home. 8When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.
